Veterinary jobs outside Australia and New Zealand
Australian-qualified veterinarians and veterinary nurses are well regarded overseas, and this page collects roles based outside Australia and New Zealand: the United Kingdom and Ireland, Canada and the United States, the Middle East, Singapore, Hong Kong and other parts of Asia. Some are permanent relocations, some are fixed-term contracts, and some are locum or seasonal positions that suit professionals taking a working year abroad. Because the inventory changes with each employer's recruitment cycle, the page can be quiet for weeks and then carry several roles at once — setting up a job alert is the best way to hear about new overseas listings.
Registration and visa pathways
Every destination has its own registration body and recognition process, and these are separate from any visa application. The United Kingdom uses the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS); Canada registers through provincial colleges such as the CVO in Ontario and the CVBC in British Columbia; the United States generally requires the NAVLE plus state licensure; Ireland, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Gulf states each have their own boards or licensing authorities. Veterinary nursing is regulated differently again — in the UK, for example, registration is through the RCVS veterinary nursing route, while many other countries do not have a statutory register for nurses. Always confirm the current requirements directly with the relevant authority before accepting a role, and allow time for qualification assessment, English-language tests and translation of documents.
What overseas employers usually provide
Employers recruiting internationally often include visa sponsorship, relocation allowances, temporary accommodation and registration support in the offer, because overseas recruitment is expensive and slow. That support is not universal: some listings are open only to candidates who already hold the right to work in the destination country. Read each advertisement for the specific visa route, whether sponsorship is available, and whether registration costs are reimbursed. Pay and conditions vary widely between markets and are rarely directly comparable to Australian awards once tax, housing, insurance and living costs are taken into account.
Deciding whether an overseas move is right for you
Beyond registration, consider the clinical model you will be working in: caseload, after-hours expectations, nurse-to-vet ratios, and how much autonomy you will have. It is worth asking about mentoring, continuing education and the path back to Australian practice, since returning professionals may need to demonstrate continuing professional development to their Australian board. Check the contract length, notice period, and what happens to sponsorship if the role ends. If you are moving with a partner or family, confirm dependant visa rights and schooling before signing. The listings below are placed by the employers themselves; use the contact details in each ad to ask about the practical details before you apply.
Equine veterinarian roles
Equine practice in Australia spans pleasure-horse ambulatory work, stud medicine (particularly in the Hunter Valley and Victoria's thoroughbred heartland), and specialist racetrack roles. Positions are concentrated in regional centres, and experienced equine vets are among the hardest roles for clinics to fill.
