Veterinarian - Specialist Jobs in Sydney - October 2026 (1)

Working as a veterinary professional in Sydney

Sydney has one of the largest veterinary job markets in Australia, spanning small-animal hospitals in the inner west and eastern suburbs, corporate groups across the greater metropolitan area, and specialist referral centres. With one of the highest pet ownership rates of any Australian capital city, demand for veterinarians and veterinary nurses is consistently strong — particularly for experienced nurses and vets with emergency or surgical interests.

Most Sydney roles are small-animal general practice, but you'll also find emergency and critical care rotations, specialist hospitals, and exotic pet clinics. Public transport and shift-friendly rosters vary by clinic, so check each listing's hours and location details carefully.

Sydney suburbs and major veterinary employers

Sydney's vacancies are spread across the whole metropolitan area, not just the CBD: the Inner West (Newtown, Leichhardt, Marrickville), the Eastern Suburbs (Alexandria, Randwick, Bondi), the North Shore (Chatswood, Artarmon, Hornsby, North Ryde), the Northern Beaches (Manly, Terrey Hills), the Hills District (Baulkham Hills, Castle Hill) and the fast-growing South-West (Liverpool, Campbelltown, Camden, Narellan, Penrith). Commuting times vary sharply between these corridors, so check the suburb in each listing rather than assuming "Sydney" means the inner city.

Large employers include the 24-hour and specialist hospitals — Animal Referral Hospital at Homebush, the Small Animal Specialist Hospitals (SASH) at North Ryde and Alexandria, and North Shore Veterinary Hospital — alongside corporate groups such as Greencross Vets and VetPartners, the University of Sydney's Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Camperdown, and dozens of independent clinics. Emergency and specialist hospitals are where most Sydney surgical, ECC and medicine nursing roles sit, so they are worth watching if you want hospital-level experience.
