Salamander Bay Veterinary Clinic is an established four-vet, small-animal practice located in the picturesque Port Stephens region—just north of Newcastle and five minutes from the beach. Situated in a popular coastal destination, our clinic enjoys a loyal client base, a varied caseload, and modern facilities. We also offer fantastic opportunities for veterinarians with a keen interest in surgery.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Locum Veterinarian to join our team on a schedule that works for you.

• Dates: Flexible blocks available between now until our permanent team commences (you choose what suits your schedule)
• Hours: Full-time (with occasional weekend shifts)
• Accommodation: Onsite accommodation provided
• Travel Allowance: Complete a minimum 2-week placement to claim reimbursement for return international flights from Auckland Airport (subject to approval)

The Position & Benefits

• The Role: A balanced mix of surgical procedures and consultations
• Autonomy: Some sole-charge shifts required
• Work-Life Balance: NO out-of-hours (OOH) on-call duties and NO public holiday shifts

• Remuneration: $75 to $110 AUD per hour plus 12% superannuation (approx. up to $135 NZD/hr), depending on experience. 

Streamlined Registration & Bonus

• Registration Refund: Complete a minimum of 4 weeks with us, and we will fully reimburse your NSW Veterinary Practitioners Board (VPB NSW) registration costs.

Thanks to the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Agreement, registering in NSW as a NZ vet is quick and simple. You just need to apply online with your proof of identity, proof of qualifications, updated CV with CPD records, and a Letter of Good Standing (LOGS) from VCNZ.

The process is fast: VCNZ takes 3–5 business days to issue your LOGS (up to 10 days in peak periods), and VPB NSW typically processes your registration within 7 business days of receiving it.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Qualifications: Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) or an equivalent veterinary degree recognised in Australia
• Experience: Minimum of 3 years' experience working in a clinical veterinary setting
• Registration: Current registration with any of the Australian Veterinary Practitioners Board (or eligibility and willingness to apply immediately under Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition)
• Preferred: Prior clinical practice experience in Australia is highly regarded, but NZ-registered vets ready to transition quickly are strongly encouraged to apply
