Head Veterinary Nurse
Job Description
Head Veterinary Nurse | Bondi Vet Hospital
An experienced nurse. A capable leader.
Bondi Vet Hospital is looking for a Head Veterinary Nurse to lead our nursing and patient care assistant teams, help shape how our hospital runs, and deliver excellent patient care.
We're a busy six-vet practice a stone's throw from Bondi Beach, with a strong community of clients, visiting specialist surgeons, ultrasonographers and a cardiologist. We love good medicine, and we want a nursing leader who shares that commitment.
The role
This is a hands-on clinical and leadership position, reporting directly to the Hospital Director and working closely with the Operations Manager. You'll lead by example on the floor, taking responsibility for the nursing and patient care assistant teams' performance, development, cohesion, stability and day-to-day organisation.
You'll be the person the team looks to for guidance, support and clear direction. That means modelling outstanding patient care and pride in your work.
You'll help build an A-team that works together, understands what's expected and feels confident asking for help. You'll also have the opportunity to improve systems, develop people and turn good ideas into practical changes that make a difference to our patients and team.
Your responsibilities
- Lead, mentor and manage our nurses and patient care assistants.
- Oversee recruitment, induction, training and ongoing professional development.
- Run regular team meetings, provide constructive feedback and conduct performance reviews.
- Recognise and address performance concerns, with clear expectations and practical support for improvement.
- Manage the nursing roster, leave requests and staffing needs.
- Maintain high standards across medical and surgical nursing, anaesthesia, inpatient care and triage.
- Develop nursing protocols and improve workflow, communication and patient care.
- Work closely with our vets to coordinate the clinical day and support the team through busy periods.
- Contribute to management meetings and follow through on agreed actions.
- Use practice data to identify opportunities to improve efficiency, productivity and staff satisfaction and reward.
- Maintain oversight of nursing resources.
Who you are
You're a qualified, experienced veterinary nurse with strong clinical skills and the confidence to lead a team.
You notice what needs doing, make sound decisions and follow things through. You can support a junior nurse, coordinate a busy surgical day and have a straightforward conversation when something needs to improve.
We're looking for someone who:
- Holds a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or an equivalent qualification.
- Has experience in small animal practice, including confident in anaesthesia and surgical nursing skills.
- Has experience leading or supervising a team, or a strong track record as a senior nurse ready to step into leadership.
- Communicates clearly, delegates effectively and stays calm under pressure.
- Is comfortable setting expectations, giving feedback and holding people accountable.
- Takes pride in patient care, organisation and the standard of their work.
- Builds a team where people feel supported, respected and motivated to do their jobs well.
- Is committed to building a stable team and contributing to the hospital's long-term growth.
What we offer
- $42–$45 per hour, depending on experience and leadership capability, plus superannuation.
- An opportunity to influence nursing standards, team development and hospital operations.
- A four-day working week for full-time staff, with participation in a rotating weekend roster.
- Free short- to medium-term accommodation for candidates relocating from interstate or overseas.
- An independent practice where your ideas, initiative and contribution matter.
If you love nursing and want to take responsibility for helping a whole team do it well, we'd love to hear from you.
